Upgraded Business Boutique

This is Heidi, moderator of this page:

The day that the Business Boutique opened, I met Apostle Iva at the front of Goodwill. I had just quit smoking and was doing just fine, just quietly waiting for her to arrive. I had butterflies in my stomach but that was nervous excitement (Seriously, not kidding- I’ve literally NO cravings for cigarettes, thank you LORD!) Anyway, she pulled up in front and got out of the car. I helped her carry stuff in and she said, “Wait till you see it!”. I walked into the room and my jaw hit the ground, ya’ll. If you look at the before and after pictures, it’s not hard to figure out why!

Lia Sophia Jewelry Fundraiser

HEAR YE, HEAR YE!! This coming Saturday, here at 411 Lakewood Circle, Suite c205a, in Colorado Springs there will be a Lia Sophia Party!! The public is invited! As you can see from the flyer, this will be well worth attending if you have any spare time whatsoever! I will be there and I hope that you will, too! R.S.V.P. at The invite goes to any and all in the area! Manitou Springs, you are invited as well!!

You can also go here to this link: It will automatically collect the R.S.V.P.

And for those who are out of state, who would like to attend, you can do so long distance by going to Lia Sophia’s webpage:

I wanted to remind everyone that final-logo-22.jpgwill be holding its next fundraiser on May 10 and 11 at the Walmart on Platte Street. Anyone in the Colorado Springs area is invited to attend and come by and see us. The following week, May 17 and 18, a fundraiser will be held at the Walmart at Palmer Park.

For those who donated $20 or more, we have these wonderful bracelets to hand out as a Thank you!

We hope to see you at the fundraiser(s) and as always, we thank those who go out and do this-without your initiative and courage (rejection in ANY form is hard to take and not everyone will/can give), we wouldn’t be able to stock the pantry and provide clothes, diapers and items for our Honey Baby Project!

We would like to thank all who contributed to our food bank on April 12, 2013!  The bracelets were most popular and we were blessed beyond belief!

We would love to thank Sonya, Irene, Teena, Melody, Cindy and James for spending all day in front of Walmart. Couldn’t do it without you; we seriously couldn’t!! And we give a big SHOUT OUT to Apostle Iva Bowers who coordinates the whole thing…AND has other projects going on at the SAME TIME! You’re an inspiration to us all!!

We are so blessed to have such willing volunteers brave the cold (and it WAS chilly!). You’re sacrifice will feed many so God bless you!!

To You, O Lord, goes all the glory and honor and praise. Without you, we wouldn’t have this love in our hearts for those down and out; we definitely wouldn’t be doing it for “free” (volunteers), at least would not have the same spirit that we do it because you ARE so precious to us. We know that it is by the Blood of our Savior and Brother that we can reach out to you and it’s by our comforting Holy Spirit that we can boldly come and ask you to bless the works of our hands and make us effective- and it’s because of the sacrifice of others (those who gave- that would be YOU!!) that we can move forward; feed hungry people; clothe newborns and prepare them for life in at least ONE area; so thank you, Lord. We’re your servants!

Good morning. This morning, I would like to share a bit more of an aspect of our donor-appreciation.

Earlier on in this site, I introduced one of our volunteers, Sonya, who creates the bead bracelets that have been shown. I would like to share some more of those beads because a lot of work goes into creating them for our donors who give $20 or more. Every one is appreciated, no matter the amount, but for those who give larger amounts, the bracelets are a visual thank you. Everyone has a fundamental need to be recognized and appreciated. This is our way of doing that.

May God bless you. We live in a world full of pain and financial need, no question, and often the decision to give or not give comes down to simple questions, “Can I trust this person or organization? Are they going to use the money to do what they said or start driving around in  Bentley‘s while putting money in their own pockets?” Those are great questions and I would LOVE for you to come by, if you are in the neighborhood, and visit me.

Personally, just so you know, I take 3 buses to get here to the office every day. By car, it’d be a 20 minute trip; by bus, it’s an hour to be at the office on time. I’m a very real person, I assure you. The staff here loves the Lord ( I would not be here if I sensed ANYTHING off about this organization). None of us are paid- we are VOLUNTEERS-but we’d love to be able to change that at some point in time and at least make enough to provide for our families. Speaking for myself, let me tell you this: I have known homelessness on a very personal basis. I’ve been a single parent who needed a start-up kit for baby. I’ve been in shelters, dependent on others for my food. I’ve slept on concrete (in California, so no danger of freezing, but nonetheless uncomfortable). I’ve spent my time in a food line waiting for food.  I know what it is to suffer lack- to watch my child not have a place to lay his head down other than where ever we could find, so I know this side of the issue. I wasn’t always this way-I grew up middle class, in private (Christian) schools,  always had a ride to whereever I needed to get. I never knew poverty as a child (post-adoption) so facing it for the first time was a shock to the system.

I apologize for going off-kilter a bit, but I always write as led by the Spirit and He is the one I seek to please. People should always go according to conscience- no matter what. Following the Spirit is the only way to walk straight in this world of twists and turns and truths and  half-truths. Go as led- here to this organization or to your place of worship, where ever that is. So long as you GIVE, it doesn’t matter (in the long run) who you give to. We need help; no question, but I’m a messenger and that’s all. I’m not a “salesman” of any repute-couldn’t sell a wool coat to an Eskimo in Antarctica but then again, I don’t have to. God will see to our needs; maybe he’ll use you- maybe he’ll go another venue. There’s no question of whether or not He’ll help- He promised and He’s not a man, that he should lie.

This is Heidi Heidi, creator of this blog and I’d like to talk to you. smiley icon

I don’t know if you’ve ever had to fundraise for any reason. It’s a terrifying-and distasteful-act for me. Maybe it’s my years of homelessness and having watched so many “fellow homeless” people do it, from California to Iowa to Colorado. Maybe it’s just my personal belief that THE CHURCH should be helping THE CHURCH. Whatever it is, it’s caused me to do what one should always do when one is faced with a dilemma-I prayed and was given scripture verses via Heather Moultrie Heather,  supporting the act of giving/receiving (of money).  Thanks, Heather! You rock!

Having said that, let me stress that I believe that it’s the Church’s responsibility to feed the poor and needy- that’s part of the Great Commission, and it would likely be done were it not for denominational infighting. While energy, time and attention (not to mention money) is diverted to territorial infighting (instead of working together as the Body of Christ), the government has been forced, for lack of a better term, to do the Church’s job for it.

Let me ALSO stress this: the fundraising that we do is not a bunch of people standing on the street begging for money. We INVITE people to sew into the Kingdom; if they want to give, great; if not, that’s fine as well. Many, maybe even MOST who give do not even know what they’re actually doing- but those of us who’ll be helping people to feed their families DO know what they’re doing, even if not in full measure. What this basically means is that for those who give, it’s a SYMBIOTIC relationship-both parties benefit which makes it a temporary-but mutually beneficial-partnership.

Naturally, no one is perfect and so we’re all subject to failure. Thus the state that the world and the Church is in today. Fortunately, we have Scripture to fall back on and that’s what leads me to this blog today. No matter what the cause, the need for funds to run a business and a food pantry remains. God fearing, loving people run this organization (and I’m hard to please and not too easily impressed, nevertheless have been), and I am blessed to have been given a part in it.

I come at this on a very personal level. See, even though I now live in an apartment (my first in over 10 years and my husband’s and mine after 8 years of marriage, our child is 4 years old and is his first real home), we still struggle financially and Overcomers International Ministry has blessed us over and over- with a job, even if volunteer for now-and with food, the money from which came at our last fundraiser. So, yes, my life has been touched by OIMCO and I’m thankful to God – and to OIMCO- for the love that’s been shown to my family and myself.

Fundraiser of May 2013 Updates!!

As you know, we held the first of four fundraisers on Friday, May 10th. We appreciate, and thank everyone who came to visit us and talk with us.  We especially appreciate those who stood out in the rain on Friday to ask others to help us. Saturday was a much better day, brighter and warmer. Thank you Lord!

Bracelets like these will soon be available for purchase on Ebay, God willing. Stay tuned! They’re already available at the fundraisers 😉

May 30th, we will be holding a food give-a-way.

Annessa…isn’t she amazing??

James and Cindy Vanlandingham

Britnee, Cindy, Connor

For those who have been following me (and I love and thank every single one of you!), you can see that the children are an addition. The Lord has sent us the most amazing woman I’ve ever met! She is the mother of (some of) the children featured: Annessa, Britnee and Connor. Jennifer is one of our new IT people. She breezed in following the interview and proceeded to  hook us up, installed programs we needed, figured out problems we were having. Amazing! Most important, she loves the Lord, too! smile, emoticon, face, fun, happy, smiley, emotion, funny Always helpful when joining a Christian ministrysmile, emoticon, face, fun, happy, smiley, emotion, funny. As for Judy, also a new face, she came in to get food and volunteered to stand at the fundraiser and we thank her from the bottom of our hearts!!

It’s now May 20th, and the fundraisers of the past two weekends have come and gone. I want to give a special shout- out to  Jennifer  Pennington and her children Annessa, Britnee, Connor and Kaitlyn as well as her cousin Dave and his children Kristin, Victoria and Austen. In addition to all these, I want to thank Irene, Teena, Melody,  Debra, and, of course, our regulars, Cindy and James Vanlandingham.

Enjoy the pictures taken by Jenny!!

Celebrate Opportunity!!

Yesterday was an amazing day! I got up a little earlier than usual, my head abuzz with the thoughts and excitement and yes, even a smidge of fear. I went through my usual routine in the morning, hopped on the bus, went to the transit center and transferred to the next bus and worked with the bus driver to figure out where, exactly, I was supposed to go. They were VERY accommodating!

See, for about 3 weeks, I’ve been planning to attend a grant writing seminar at theimagejpeg_7 (1)   here in Colorado Springs and I’ve been sooooo looking forward to it!

I’m  sure I’ve mentioned that I was asked to write a grant for Overcomers International Ministry.  I am glad to do it but as always, when faced with something I have never done before, I didn’t know how to proceed. I tried to read a couple of grant-writing books, including Grant Writing for Dummies but apparently I needed more because it made NO sense lol.

So, after getting off the bus yesterday at the Broadmore Hotel, I walked the direction the bus driver instructed and finally made it to my destination. I was blown away-the view was amazing!!

imagejpeg_9 (1)

I was in the first class, “Case for Support”  from 9-12. That went very well, and then we had lunch (most of the people went out of the area to eat). Then, at 1:30,  we met back at the Penrose Room and started “Effective Grant writing”.  Because I’m new to the area, there are a lot of places I’ve never been and so yesterday I played TOURIST as well as STUDENT. What a day! Thank you, Lord, for the opportunity!!

Please enjoy the following montage of the pictures I took yesterday!
